We are the RSPCA, and we exist to inspire everyone to create a better world for every animal. Every day we change lives, laws, industries and minds so all animals can live a better life.
Founded in 1824 by pioneers including William Wilberforce, Richard Martin and the Reverend Arthur Broome, we helped ignite a global movement for animals that continues to shape laws, attitudes and behaviour today. For more than 200 years, we have worked to prevent cruelty and promote kindness wherever animals and people live side by side.
Our impact is powered by people – across England and Wales, we have more than 130 local branches and over 10,000 volunteers. Every day, our inspectors and rescue teams respond to animals in urgent need, supported by expert staff and our dedicated volunteers across our hospitals, centres, branches and partner organisations. We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome or release thousands of animals each year.
But we don’t just rescue and treat the symptoms of cruelty; we strike at its roots. Through campaigning, advocacy and evidence-led policy work, we have helped secure more than 400 changes to the law. We challenge cruelty in laboratories, on farms, in homes and in the wild, and through our RSPCA Assured scheme we champion higher welfare standards for farmed animals.
We also focus on changing behaviours by sharing practical advice, delivering education in schools and communities, and working alongside businesses, charities and families. We help people make informed, compassionate choices that improve animals’ lives. Beyond our borders we use our voice and influence to drive better protection for animals around the world.
As we enter our third century, the challenges facing animals are growing and becoming more complex. Climate change, intensive farming, conflict and the cost-of-living crisis are putting unprecedented pressure on animal welfare. But with renewed purpose, ambitious plans and the strength of our movement behind us, we are ready to lead lasting change.
